Wichita Wingnuts News Release
EL PASO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the El Paso Diablos 5-1 at Cohen Stadium on Friday night.
Jorge Delgado had three hits and drove in four of the Wingnuts' five runs to support Gabe Medina who went eight strong innings without allowing an earned run.
Wichita struck early, scoring twice in the top of the first. Ryan Patterson reached first base with an infield single to lead off the game. Cesar Suarez pulled a single to left that moved Patterson to second. Patterson and Suarez executed a double steal. After Carlos Riveral reached on catcher's interference to load the bases with one out, Raul Gonzalez fouled off three two-strike pitches before lifting a flyball to right-center that scored Patterson. Delgado was next and hit a smash to first that went off the glove Bryon Smith. The infield single scored Suarez to make it 2-0 and extended Delgado's hitting streak to 18 games.
The Diablos threatened against Medina in the fourth with runners on second and third and one out. Medina retired Adam Deleo on a foul popup down the left field line caught by Josh Horn. Eric Gomez then hit a soft line drive over the second base bag that Suarez ran down on one hop. From the edge of the outfield grass, Suarez made a leaping throw to first to get Gomez and save the tying runs.
The Wingnuts capitalized on the momentum from the defensive play in the next inning. Rivera lined a single to center with one out and moved to second when Gonzalez grounded a single through the left side. With a full count, Delgado ripped a double over the head of Jonathan Reynoso that scored two runs and made it 4-0. Delgado added another RBI in the top of the seventh with a single to center that scored Jorge Cortes.
In addition to Suarez' great play in the fourth, Medina came up with clutch outs in the third. After a one-out triple from Rico Santana in the third, Medina came back and struck out Arnoldo Ponce and Kyle Nichols back-to-back to end the inning. Medina helped strand nine runners on base.
Medina allowed one unearned run, which came in the bottom of the eighth. The right-hander struck out six and walked one while scattering 10 hits for the win. Former Wingnut Amad Stephens took the loss, allowing five earned runs in 6.1 IP. Luke Massetti pitched a perfect ninth to finish the game.
