El Paso Diablos News Release

El Paso, TX - The Wichita Wingnuts dealt the Diablos their third consecutive loss winning 5-1 at Cohen Stadium on Friday night. Wichita, a team in the thick of the playoff race, will remain just a half game out of first place in the north division. El Paso lost their third straight game and has just a 3-14 record from teams from the north division this season.

Wichita opened up the scoring with two runs on three hits in the first inning. They increased their lead to 4-0 with two runs in the fifth before adding one more in the seventh. The Diablos finally broke through in the eighth inning but needed a lot of help to do it. Back to back errors by Wichita shortstop Josh Horn put runners at the corners and then Bryon Smith bounced into a double play to bring in the run which capped off all the scoring for the evening.

Amad Stephens made a spot start and did it against his former team. Stephens (5-9) battled well but got no support from his offense. He pitched one out into the sixth inning and allowed five runs on 12 hits while striking out four. El Paso never could figure out Wichita starter Gabe Medina (4-7) who picked up his fourth win of the season. He went eight innings and allowed just one unearned run while scattering ten hits.

El Paso missed out on a few big opportunities to score runs. They had a man at third with one out in the third inning and then runners at second and third in the fourth inning but could not score in either situation. They have now scored just seven runs in their last three games. J.D. Reininger had the hot bat on the night going 3-4. Kyle Nichols went 2-4 while Rico Santana went 2-4 with a triple.

El Paso will try to even up the series on Saturday night. Dustin Birosak (0-1, 7.13) will toe the rubber against the Wingnuts' Sean Teague (3-3, 2.54). First pitch is slated for 7:05. It is a military night as the Diablos offer free entry to all members of the military with a military I.D. Fireworks will follow the game. Fans can listen in online at www.diablos.com.
