Pheasants and Sioux City Tie in Exhibition

YANKTON, S.D. -- THe Sioux Falls Pheasants and Sioux City Explorers played to a 4-4 tie in their first exhibition game of the season on Thursday night.

Following a youth clinic put on by the Pheasants, the I-29 rivals battled before 1,214 fans at Riverside Field.

In the first inning, Jonny Kaplan punctuated his return to Sioux Falls with lead off home run. Trevor Lawhorn and Jared Bolden added back-to-back RBI singles later in the frame to give the Pheasants a 3-0 lead.

Cesar Nicolas scored on an error in the fifth for a 4-0 lead before Sioux City answered with four runs. Brian Bistagne's RBI single capped a two-run eighth inning for the Explorers that evened the game.

Pheasant pitchers Alan DeRatt and Josh Walker combined to shut out the Explorers in the first five innings. Thomas Heithoff and Kyle Mertins allowed two run apiece, but Daniel Cooper threw a perfect ninth.

Cristian Guerrero had a single and Mark SHorey doubled for the Pheasants, who had five hits on the night.

The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, May 11, in Huron, S.D.

The Pheasants will host Sioux City on Thursday, May 17, at Sioux Falls Stadium for the regular season opener.
