Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Hammond native Mike Coles had two hits in his return to Riverside Park and the RailCats beat Windy City 10-1 in an exhibition game that went nine and a half innings. It was a special night for baseball in Northwest Indiana as the 'Cats hosted the game at the youth baseball field in Hammond.
Coles celebrated his homecoming by leading off the second inning with a single to right. He moved to second on a fly out by Jason James and scored on Kyle Haines' RBI single down the left field line. Coles called Riverside Park his home field when he played for the Hammond Chiefs during high school in 2000 and 2001.
Coles was back at it in the third as he blooped a single to center following Ryan Babineau's lead-off walk. Babineau, who had stolen second, stopped at third on the single but came around to score on James' sac fly to center to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead.
RailCats starter Andrew Johnston threw three scoreless innings. He allowed a hit, walked none and struck out two.
The RailCats offense went back to work in the fourth. Adam Klein walked and Mike Massaro singled. With runners on second third, Rico Washington singled to left to extend the lead to 4-0. Haines drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning to push across another run. The inning ended after that, despite the fact that there were two outs, because ThunderBolts pitcher Ryan Torrey had reached his pitch count.
Windy City plated a run in the fifth on a sac fly by Michael Torres. The run was charged to Nolan Nicholson, who gave up two hits and struck out two in an inning and a third.
James knocked in a pair with a single to left center in the sixth and Haines followed with an RBI single to make it 8-1. Both players drove in three runs in the game.
Stephen Hiscock pitched a scoreless inning and a third for the RailCats and he was followed by Chris Allen who did the same. Derek Drage, threw the final three scoreless innings, with three strikeouts and one walk. For the second straight day, play continued to the top of the tenth inning so that Drage could pitch a third inning.
The final runs for the RailCats came in the ninth, with one run scoring on an error and another on an infield single by Mike Rohde.
The exhibition season continues on Friday at 2 p.m. when the RailCats travel to take on the ThunderBolts at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, Ill.
