St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (May 11, 2012) - With less than a week until the regular season begins the St. Paul Saints continue chip away at the off-season rust. Manager George Tsamis got five pitchers into the game as the Saints one hit the Minnesota Amateur All-Star Team (players from various town ball teams around the state) in a 6-1 victory on Friday at Midway Stadium in front of 3,036.
In what could potentially be the Saints Opening Day starter, Danny Gutierrez worked 5.0 strong innings allowing just one run on one hit while walking two and striking out four. He retired the first nine batters he faced before walking Steve Boldt to lead off the fourth. Boldt would steal second, move to third on a single by Dan Mossey and score on a sac fly from Jimmy Bohmbach. Chris Odegaard, Reid Mahon, Billy Spottiswood and Dan Sattler all worked one perfect inning of relief.
The offense scored right away when Jim Rapoport led off the first inning with a double and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Ole Sheldon.
In the third the Saints made it 2-0 when Rapoport walked, stole second and scored on Shane Costa's RBI single. Costa finished the day 2-4 with an RBI.
The big inning came in the sixth when the Saints scored three runs with two outs. Jose Hernandez started it off with a solo homer to dead center, his first of the exhibition season, making it 3-1 Saints. Benji Johnson followed with a walk, Adam Frost singled him to second and the two moved up on a wild pitch. Jon Townsend doubled them both home giving the Saints a 5-1 lead. Frost finished the day 3-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.
The Saints finished the scoring in the seventh when Tanner Townsend walked with two outs and scored on a double from Ronnie Bourquin.
The Saints will be in Hinckley on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. exhibition game against the Hinckley Knights/East Minny All-Star Team at The Brennan.
