Phantoms Weekly - Off to Manchester, Binghamton and Syracuse

November 13, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

Coming Up

The Adirondack Phantoms continue on their five-game road trip with three games in four days taking the team to Manchester, Binghamton and Syracuse. The slate of five represents the second-longest road-swing of the season for the Phantoms trailing only a seven-gamer facing the team next March.

The stretch begins with the team's first morning start-time in three years as they travel to Mancehster for a Wednesday morning game at 10:00am featuring thousands of kids on a Day Game Field Trip. Radio coverage for the game will be just like normal...only a lot earlier! Pepsi Countdown to Faceoff at 9:30am on Q101.7.

The Adirondack Phantoms are 1-0 all-time in such games with the only other morning game taking place in the team's first season on November 4, 2009 with a 4-2 victory at Bridgeport.

Manchester is the affiliate of the defending Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and features four players who were part of the Cup-winning team last year. Terry Murray and Brayden Schenn both have recent ties with the Kings and know many of their players.

Adirondack will travel to Binghamton Friday night for their first game of the season against the Senators. And then head back to Syracuse for their third game of the year vs. the Crunch.

Adirondack's next home game is Wednesday, November 21 against Bridgeport to begin their longest homestand of the season, a six-gamer. That Thanksgiving Feast Weekend of Hockey at the Glens Falls Civic Center features home games on the day before Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) and also on Saturday, November 24 on Men's Cancer Awareness Night.

The Phantoms are 5-6-0 overall after splitting a pair of 2-1 games vs. Rochester and Albany last weekend.

Looking Further Ahead

The longest homestand of the season gets underway on Wednesday, November 21 and features the annual Black Friday game on Friday, November 23 followed by another big one on Saturday, November 24 against the Hershey Bears on Youth Jersey Giveaway Night presented by the Glens Falls Hospital Rehabilitation Team combined with Mustache Jersey Night for the Phantoms presented by Parks Heritage Federal Credit Union featuring a post-game jersey auction with part of the proceeds to benefit the C.R. Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital.

Phantoms Week in Review

Friday, November 9: Adirondack 2 - Rochester 1

Danny Syvret and Garrett Roe lit the lamp to open the team's five-game road-swing as the Adirondack Phantoms avenged a loss to the same Rochester team who defeated them on their home ice a couple weeks prior.

Cal Heeter allowed just one goal that barely trickled through him while makes 25 saves on 26 shots for his second professional win.

Roe's game-winner about midway through the third period was deflected by a Rochester defenseman and then bounced and hopped it's way towards and around goalie David Leggio. The victory over the affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres came without the services of Sean Couturier who was out of the lineup battling a flu-bug.

Tye McGinn, Brayden Schenn and Ben Holmstrom all had close-calls at the empty-net in the closing seconds of the game.

Adirondack is 1-1-0 against Rochester and will travel to Blue Cross Arena again in December.

Saturday, November 10: Albany 2 - Adirondack 1

Scott Munroe and Jeff Frazee both made a number of sparkling saves but the Phantoms came up just short in the 2-1 decision at the Devils. Albany also took a 2 games to 1 lead in the Time Warner Cable Cup series but there are still nine games remaining in the regular season between the two Northway rivals.

Eric Wellwood's unassisted goal carrying the puck out in front for a blast short side on Frazee's glove-hand tied the score at 1-1 late in the second period.

It appeared Tye McGinn was going to give the Phantoms the lead early in the third period on a brilliant cross-ice pass by Brandon Manning. But the back-door shot by McGinn was somehow turned aside by the lunging goalie Frazee with his right leg and a mere 10 seconds later Albany was able to convert on a 3-on-2 rush back the other way with Matt Anderson getting the game-winner in the ultra-quick turn of events.

Brandon Manning and Harry Zolnierczyk were denied on shorthanded breakaway opportunities.

Coach Murray was especially pleased with Adirondack's penalty kill that held Albany to 0-for-7 and kept Adirondack right there for the comeback attempt.

Saratoga Spine Phantoms Player of the Week - Garrett Roe

Garrett Roe is the Saratoga Spine Phantoms Player of the Week. The second-year pro out of St. Cloud State (Minn.) scored the game-winning goal Friday on his fortunate bouncer after a Rochester deflection. Roe also generated several other quality scoring chances and played a good all-around game while also showing his pesky side in a couple of shoving and pushing matches after the whistle.

The goal was Roe's second of the year. Last year, Roe scored eight goals and 32 assists for 40 points in his rookie campaign in professional hockey. Roe was second on the team in assists and fourth in points.

The Vienna, Va. native had 55 career goals in four seasons at St. Cloud State in the highly regarded WCHA prior to signing with the Phantoms.

Striking First and Special Teams

Special teams continues to play a huge role and sometimes the stats lead to some extremely simple results. When Adirondack scores at least one power play goal, they win the game. If they go oh-fer on the power play, then they do not. It really has been as simple as that. 5-0 with a power play goal but 0-6 if their power play gets shut down.

Coach Murray has emphasized that scoring the first goal in any game is crucial. But Adirondack has also shown an impressive ability to battle back from behind. The Friday night victory at Rochester was the team's fourth this year in which they were initially trailing. The Amerks scored the first goal of the night. But Adirondack shut them down after that to pave the way for the comeback 2-1 victory. Adirondack has scored the first goal of the game only once this season coming in their 4-0 victory over Albany on November 3.

Getting to the three goal mark in any game has proven to be a key as well. Adirondack is 4-0-0 when they score three or more goals, they are 1-6 in games scoring two or fewer goals.
