YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Youngstown Phantoms (18-14-4-3, 43 points) held a 2-0 lead after the first period, but surrendered the final four goals of the game in a 4-2 defeat against the Muskegon Lumberjacks Saturday night at the Covelli Centre.
"Little bit of the inverse of last night," said Phantoms Head Coach Brad Patterson. "Last night we didn't have a great first (period), tonight I thought we had a great first. Second period they had a ton of push back, some of that was special teams drive, and I didn't like our response. We needed to find a way to swing that pendulum when you lose momentum over the course of a game."
Youngstown opened the scoring 4:36 into regulation on Shane LaChance's sixth goal of the season, a beautiful backhander that he tucked around the left leg of Aleksandr Kuleshov (16 saves) as he cut across the net mouth. Grant Porter made it 2-0 at 13:11 when his wrister from the right dot beat Kuleshov to the blocker side. The goal was Porter's fifth of the season, third of the weekend, and it all happened thanks to a LaChance steal in the neutral zone.
Muskegon scored the only goal of the second period when Quinn Hutson broke free down the middle and beat Jacob Fowler (41 saves) with a backhander to the blocker side at 13:01. The Lumberjacks outshot Youngstown 19-1 in the second period, buoyed by four power plays in the period. Patterson praised his netminder's efforts in the middle frame. "Especially in the second period, (Fowler) made a ton of Grade 'A' stop," said Patterson. "He really gave us every opportunity (to win). I know he would never express disappointment, but I know the guys would, when those guys stand in the net and give you an opportunity, and you kind of fade, it's tough to stomach."
The Lumberjacks scored 44 seconds into the third period to tie the game when Ben Strinden redirected Hutson's wrister from the right circle through Fowler's five-hole. Muskegon took the lead at 11:07 on Strinden's second goal of the game, a wrister from the left side that beat Fowler glove side as he was out of position after tracking Hutson across the mouth of the crease. Phil Tresca added an empty net goal at 19:09 to cap off the scoring.
Youngstown concludes their three-game homestand with the School Day Game Wednesday morning against the U18's.
