3rd Period Rally Falls Short as Chicago Knocks off Caps 3-2
February 19, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
The Madison Capitols were inches away from forcing overtime tonight after a 3rd period rally fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the Chicago Steel.
Like last night, the Caps didn't have the start that they wanted. The Steel found the back of the net 69 seconds into tonight's contest with a low shot from the point.
"We have to figure out our starts," Capitols head coach Tommy Upton said. "Lately our starts haven't been great. Whether it's one shift or the first couple shifts, giving up a goal is completely on me. I have to do a better job of preparing our team to go to battle for a full 60."
Trailing 3-0 after 40 minutes of play, the Caps left every last ounce of energy they had on the ice for the final 20 minutes. Outshooting the Steel 17-3 in the final period of regulation, the Caps got a pair of goals from alternate captain, Reid Pabich just 3:56 apart.
The Capitols held the league's top power play scoreless tonight, shutting them done on all three attempts.
Madison gets back to work tomorrow night as they wrap up the weekend with the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Be The Miracle night. Puck drop slated for 7:05 p.m.
"I'm very proud of the guys for the way they stuck with it tonight even though we weren't getting some bounces early," Upton said. "I thought we played a pretty good game overall honestly, for 58 minutes. The guys battled, they played hard and that's a good team over there in Chicago but I expect that same effort out of them tomorrow night against Dubuque."
