YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Second year forward, Ty Loney, scored twice for the Phantoms, but the team was unable to close the gap as they fell 4-2 against Team USA.
Team USA went into the third period with a 4-2 lead. The Phantoms put fourteen shots on goal, but were unable to add to their two-goal total.
"The team looked a little sluggish in the first," said Head Coach Curtis Carr. "This was the first bus trip and you can tell it took a little skating to really get the legs loose. We dominated the third period and it was really good to see the guys compete the way they did. We hit three posts during the period. If we were able to get a bounce here or there, then the result might have been different."
The Phantoms were guilty of nine infractions during the contest. They were able to kill seven of the nine penalties, but the two power play goals proved costly as the Phantoms fell by two goals.
"Penalties are not a concern at this point," said Carr. "We are competing, guys are playing physical, and that is what we want. I would rather see them play physical and take a penalty than sit back and not take the body. There is a fine line when it comes to playing physical and taking a penalty. There is a learning curve for our new guys to figure out exactly where that line is."
The Phantoms face the Team USA Under 17 squad tomorrow afternoon and Carr is confident that he can get his squad to bounce back. "We had a great third period," said Carr. "We need to focus on that and not how we started the game. We need to take the difference between the first and third [periods] and play like that for sixty minutes. When you play a team like USA and give them scoring opportunities they will take advantage of them. They showed that to the guys tonight."
