Black Hawks Bow in Third

September 17, 2010 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

When the going got rough, the Waterloo Black Hawks went shorthanded Friday evening during a 5-1 exhibition loss in Des Moines against the Buccaneers.

The Hawks more than held their own during the several third period scraps which broke out, but with four Waterloo players sent to the showers early and more than four minutes of major power play time, Des Moines cashed in. Dajon Mingo scored twice in a four-goal third period; his second tally came during a power play and capped a two-on-none rush from center. Doug Clifford and Andrew Miller also added markers in the final frame.

The opening goal didn't find the net until more than half the game had elapsed. Logan Nelson poked in a rolling puck during Des Moines' sixth power play of the evening at 13:39 of the second period. In all, the Buccaneers went three-for-eight on the power play. Waterloo answered just 16 seconds after Nelson's score when a three-on-two rush led to a pileup in the Buccaneer goalmouth. Jamie Hill was credited with a goal as the puck appeared to be kicked in by a Des Moines s player .

That fast flurry followed fine goaltending, including breakaway saves by the Black Hawks' Eamon McAdam and the Buc's Tyler Bruggeman. Bruggeman also benefitted from some close misses as the Hawks clanked the post late in the first and twice during a five-on-three power play in the early second. In all, McAdam made 40 saves, while Bruggeman and Nicholas Kulmsnovsky split time and combined for 35 stops.

The Black Hawks are just beginning a busy preseason weekend. Saturday night they return to Young Arena to host the Sioux City Musketeers at 7:05. At 1PM on Sunday, the cross-state, U.S. 20 rivals tilt again in Waterloo. Tickets are available from the Black Hawks box office beginning at 11:30 each morning.

Box score available from Pointstreak at the link below, but several Des Moines players have not yet been entered into the system.
