Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
The Sioux Falls Stampede rallied from a 3-1 deficit, but fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Sioux City Musketeers on Friday night at the Larson Ice Arena in Brookings, SD. The Stampede fell to 0-0-1 in the pre-season while Sioux City improved to 2-0-0.
It was the first game of the pre-season for the Stampede and the second for the Musketeers and early on it showed. The Muskies wasted little time getting on the board as Tim O'Brien took a pass from Caleb Herbert and beat Stampede netminder Juho Olkinuora just 3:30 in. 42 seconds later Nick Gordon's blast from the high slot went through traffic and found the back of the net to give the Musketeers a 2-0 edge. That's the way it would stand until 11:52 into the period when Colton Warner scored. Standing outside the edge of the goal crease, Warner jammed in a pass from Sam Cotta through the legs of Musketeer goaltender Matt Skoff to cut the lead in half. Sioux City outshot Sioux Falls 11-9 in the period.
It was back-and-forth in the second period until Tommy Olczyk one-timed a pass from Mike Williams just outside the right circle to give Sioux City a 3-1 lead after two periods. The Muskies outshot the Herd 7-6 in the period.
The Stampede rallied in the third to get back in the game. Christian Isackson brought the Stampede within a goal just 1:53 into the period when he charged the net, picked up a loose puck and backhanded it into the back of the net. 8:53 the Stampede went on the powerplay and Ryan Misiak cashed in on a beautiful tick-tack-toe play. Joe Rubbelke held the puck at the left point before sliding it down to Connor Reilly in the right circle who slid the puck through the slot to Misiak who one-timed it in to the back of the net to tie the game and bring the Brookings faithful to their feet. The Stampede controlled the rest of the period and out shot Sioux City 14-6 in the period. The Stampede nearly won the game in the final seconds of the period, but a Ryan Jacobson breakaway was broken up with 30 seconds remaining. Colton Warner was flagged for a penalty at the buzzer and the Stampede went into overtime down a man.
In the extra session, the Stampede penalty kill was strong, stopping the powerplay, but Sioux City still managed six shots while the Herd managed only two shots. Neither team was able to scored forcing a shootout in which the Musketeers outscored the Stampede 2-1. Ryan Jacobson tallied the only goal in the shootout for the Herd.
The Stampede will play their second pre-season game tomorrow night in Luverne at the Blue Mound Ice Arena when they face the Des Moines Buccaneers at 7:05 PM.
