Phantoms Defeat Springfield in Tampa, 4-3
December 15, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
(Tampa, FL, Dec. 15, 2004) - Patrick Sharp tied a team record with four assists and captain Boyd Kane had a three-point night as the Philadelphia Phantoms held on to defeat the Springfield Falcons at the St. Pete Times Forum, 4-3.
After falling behind early, the Phantoms scored four unanswered goals to take control of the game before a late surge by Springfield in the third period.
After a Shane Willis power play goal 2:24 into the contest, Mark Murphy tied the game with his eighth goal of the season. Sharp faked a shot and then dropped the puck to Murphy, and his slap shot beat goaltender Jamie Storr at 6:29 after Storr had already fallen to the ice.
The Phantoms took control of the game in the second period, scoring all three goals in the frame. Former Falcon Kane registered his first goal of the year six minutes in, netting Philadelphia's second shorthanded goal of the season. Sharp fed Kane with a perfect cross-ice pass, and the Phantoms captain let fly with a one-timer that found the back of the net.
Later, Sharp's slap shot deflected off of Kane and Dennis Seidenberg and in to make it a 3-1 game at 10:33, with Seidenberg getting credit for the goal just seconds after a Philadelphia power play had expired.
Four minutes after the shorthanded goal, John Slaney registered his 400th point in the AHL with his goal at 14:33 with a blistering one-timer on a feed from Sharp.
Sharp now has a four-game point-scoring streak, with eight points over that span (2G, 6A) and took over the team lead in scoring with 23 points overall.
Springfield made things interesting when Ryan Craig scored a power play goal with 5:17 left in the game and Willis added his second goal with 20 seconds remaining, but that would be all the Falcons would get as Neil Little picked up the victory between the pipes finishing with 25 saves.
The Phantoms return home for a pair of games at the Wachovia Spectrum this weekend; Friday against the Manchester Monarchs at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday to take on the Binghamton Senators at 6:35 p.m.
