Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - A pair of goals for the visitors in the first five minutes of the third period proved too large of a hill for the Youngstown Phantoms to climb as they fell in Game 2 of their First Round series in the Clark Cup Playoffs 5-3 to the Madison Capitols Tuesday night at the Covelli Centre. Madison won the series two-game-to-none, ending the Phantoms' season.
Madison broke a 1-1 tie just 1:13 into the final period. Tyler Haskins won a faceoff cleanly to Jake Dunlap, and Dunlap slapped a one-timer past Kyle Chauvette (26 saves) to give Madison their first lead of the game. Just over three-and-a-half minutes later, Jack Musa blasted a one-timer of his own past Chauvette, doubling the Madison lead to 3-1.
The score stayed that way until the final five minutes of the period. 13 seconds after Chauvette was pulled to the bench for the extra attacker, Adam Ingram fired a wrister from the left half-wall past Simon Latkoczy (31 saves) to cut the Madison lead in half. Unfortunately for Youngstown, they would get no closer. Back-to-back empty net goals for the Capitols came at 18:04 from Quinn Finley and at 19.08 from Dunlap to put the game out of reach at 5-2. Jaden Grant scored with six seconds left on the clock to make up the final margin.
"I thought we had plenty of opportunity tonight," said Phantoms Head Coach Brad Patterson. "That's the hard thing. Usually, you're disappointed after a game where maybe you didn't get them, but tonight I thought that the puck just didn't go into the back of the net for us."
Youngstown opened the scoring with a power play goal late in the first period. It took just 9 seconds of power play time for Garrett Wright to blast a one-timer from the left wall past Latkoczy and give Youngstown the early advantage. It was the first time in the 11 games between the Phantoms and Capitols this season that the team that scored first did not win the game. Madison tied the game at 2:34 of the second when Reid Pabich put home the rebound of Dunlap's breakaway attempt.
The Phantoms have now lost their last six playoff games, dating back to the 2018 Clark Cup Final. All six of those losses were games played at home. Madison moves on to play the 1-seed in the Eastern Conference, the Chicago Steel. That Eastern Conference Semifinal series will begin Friday in Madison.
