Oshawa Generals News Release
Peterborough, Ontario - A strong second and third period effort from the Peterborough Petes was too much for the Generals to handle on Thursday, as six goals in a row were enough to give the Petes a 6-3 victory. Derek Mathers and Stephen Pierog were terrific for Peterborough, with Mathers collecting 4 points (2G, 2A), and Pierog collecting 3 of his own (1G, 2A) in front of 2,665 fans at the Peterborough Memorial Centre . Scott Laughton scored a highlight reel goal on Andrew D'Agostini after being sent in from the blue line.
Matt Petgrave opened the scoring in the first, with some quick puck movement followed by a quick wrist-shot from the point that beat a screened D'Agostini at the 4:04 mark of the period. The lead was extended to 2-0, when Scott Laughton was sent in from the Petes blue line. Making some shifty moves on the defenders, Laughton flipped the puck over a stick before sliding through the five-hole of the Petes net minder. Shots were 18-13 for the Generals after one.
The Petes came out a new team in the second, as they held the Generals to just 1 shot through the first seven minutes of the period. Stephen Pierog started the Petes scoring with a rebound off the end-boards, beating Daniel Altshuller to shrink the lead to 2-1. A tap-in from Nick Ritchie and a snap-shot from Derek Mathers gave the Petes the momentum, as well as their first lead of the game.
Penalty troubles began to cause problems for the Generals in the third as the Petes began to capitalize on their chances. A point shot on the Petes power play was tipped home by Nick Czinder, as he beat Ken Appleby, who relieved Altshuller after Pet-30erborough's third goal. Nick Ritchie scored his second goal of the game as he beat Generals defenders to the loose puck in the crease. Derek Mathers capped the Petes scoring, as the Peterborough captain roofed the puck past Appleby, making the score 6-2.
Midway through the third, Oshawa responded with a goal of their own. On their third power play of the game, Lucas Lessio took a shot from the point with Tyler Biggs standing out front. Before D'Agostini could react, Biggs got his stick on the puck, beating the net minder and swinging the momentum the Generals way. However the Petes proved to be too strong and skated away with the 6-3 victory.
The Generals out shot Peterborough 40-36.
The Generals return to the General Motors Centre on the 22nd as they host the Ottawa 67's. Puck drop is at 7:35pm.
