Peterson and Suarez Dazzle, Ponies Shutout Bowie in Series Opener

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (19-13) used dominant pitching to blank the Bowie Baysox, 2-0, in the series opener at Mirabito Stadium on Tuesday night.

New York Mets left-hander David Peterson made a rehab start for Binghamton and dazzled. Peterson struck out eight batters over 5.1 scoreless frames, while allowing five hits and no walks. Peterson threw 70 pitches and 53 strikes for a 75.7 K%.

Right-hander Joander Suarez came in to relieve Peterson with one out in the sixth and Dylan Beavers on second base. Suarez stranded Beavers on third, retiring the two batters he faced in the sixth.

Suarez struck out five batters over 3.1 scoreless frames, while allowing just one baserunner and retiring 11 of the 12 batters he faced, en route to the first save of his career. He threw 48 pitches and 35 strikes for a 72.9 K%.

Peterson and Suarez combined to strike out 13 batters and issue zero walks against Bowie (17-16).

In the bottom of the third inning, Matt Rudick drew a two-out walk and Rhylan Thomas followed with an RBI double to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead against Ryan Long (0-3). It marked Thomas' 12 th run batted in and seventh double of the season.

In the seventh inning, Rowdey Jordan led off with a solo home run against Cameron Weston, which gave Binghamton a 2-0 lead. It marked Jordan's third homer of the season.

The Rumble Ponies will continue their six-game series with the Bowie Baysox (Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles) at Mirabito Stadium on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 11:05 a.m. on 'Baseball in Education Day' and the game will be broadcast live on WNBF News Radio 1290 & 92.1 FM and MiLB.TV.

Postgame Notes: The Ponies have won nine of their last 10 games...It marked Binghamton's second shutout of the season, with the other coming at home against Hartford on May 4...Jordan extended his hitting streak to five games...After Suarez's outing, here is how he ranks among Eastern League pitchers: 1 st in WHIP (0.86), 2 nd in BAA (.171), 4 th in IP (37.1), and 6 th in ERA (2.17).
