Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawks goaltender Cal Petersen has been chosen to participate in the World Junior A Challenge Tournament scheduled to begin two-and-a-half weeks from now in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, USA Hockey announced Thursday.
The U.S. Junior Select Team which will play during the competition - composed mostly of USHL players and staff - is the defending World Junior A Challenge champion and has claimed a medal during each of five previous appearances in the event. Last November, Waterloo sent six players to the tournament.
Petersen is in his second full year with the Black Hawks and currently owns a 3-1-0 record and a 92.5% save percentage. With 27 career regular season victories, he currently ranks ninth during the Hawks' modern era. The Waterloo native is committed to Notre Dame. In June, the Buffalo Sabres selected Petersen during the fifth round of the NHL Draft.
The World Junior A Challenge starts on November 4. Two teams from Canada, along with entries Czech Republic, Russia, and Switzerland will skate. The United States will see Russia and Canada East during pool play, with all six squads having the opportunity to advance to the elimination stage. The championship game is slated for Sunday, November 10th.
