Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY --- Vermont got their eight-game roadtrip off on the right track as Franklyn Jimenez's seventh inning sacrifice fly broke a 1-1 tie and three Expos pitchers combined on a five-hitter in a 2-1 victory over the Staten Island Yankees in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at the Ballpark at St. George.

Devin Perrin (2-2) allowed just one run on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts over six innings to pick up the victory. Perrin allowed one hit in each of the first three innings and Staten Island's only run came on a solo home run from Carlos Rosario in the fifth inning to tie the game 1-1.

The Expos took a 2-1 lead in the seventh as Doug Vroman and Ja'Mar Clanton led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Jason Tuttle walked to load the bases. Jimenez followed with a flyball to rightfield for a sacrifice fly to score Vroman as the throw home was off-line.

Chris Goodman came on in relief of Perrin in the bottom of the seventh and struckout two in a perfect seventh inning, but gave up a leadoff single in the eighth. After a sacrifice bunt, Enrique Cruz moved over to third on a wild pitch. But Goodman left the tying run at third with a called third strike-out and a groundout to first.

Carlos Caceres came in the ninth and picked up his first save of the season with three straight groundball outs to give Vermont just its third road victory of the season in 25 games, but its second in the last three.

Vermont pitchers had allowed five or more runs in 15 of 18 games between July 22nd and August 8th, but have now given up just 1 run in three of the last four games (all Expo victories) to lower their team ERA from 5.22 to 4.98, marking the first time since July 19th the team ERA has been under five.

The Expos were held to just six hits in the game by three different Yankee pitchers, including starter Eric Hacker, who allowed one unearned run on four hits over five innings. Adam Wheeler (0-3) struckout four in three innings of relief, but was gave up the run in the seventh to take the loss.

Vermont (13-42) is now 6-8 in its last 14 games and are 11-10 when holding its opponent to under five runs in a game. The Expos and Yankees (20-35) will play game two of the three-game series on Wednesday night at Staten Island with Anthony Pearson the probable starter for Vermont.
