Greenville Grrrowl News Release
GREENVILLE, SC â The Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL, proud affiliates of the Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers, have announced the signing of three additional players for the 2004-05 season, bringing the total to six. Veteran left-winger COLIN PEPPERALL returns to Greenville after a two-year absence following the Kelly Cup Championship in 2001-02, while second-year forward RICHARD NAUMANN agrees to terms with the Grrrowl. Rookie defenseman DARYL PIERCE has decided to play his first professional season in Greenville after a solid career at Canisius College. In April, the Grrrowl announced the signing of Mark Concannon, Mike Nelson and Russell Spence â all three returning forwards from the 2003-04 season.
COLIN PEPPERALL (5-11, 180lbs., left wing), returns to Greenville with a Kelly Cup Championship ring from the 2001-02 season with the Grrrowl, bringing a solid veteran work ethic to the ice. Pepperall, a Niagara Falls, ONT native, played the 2003-04 season with the Columbus Cottonmouths before being classified as a free agent at the close of the year when Columbus was granted suspension from the ECHL. Colin, a 5th round selection by the New York Rangers in the 1996 NHL draft, had a career-high point total last season with 58 points (18G, 40A) in 72 games, but put together his best stretch as a professional with 100 points (45G, 55A) in 128 games with Greenville during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons, plus a strong run during the Championship season with 21 points (8G, 13A) in 17 games.
"I am really looking forward to coming back to Greenville," stated Pepperall. "I have great memories from my time with the Grrrowl, and loved playing in front of the passionate fans. The organization has been supportive of me throughout my career, and I feel confident that Coach Marks is working hard to make sure that the Grrrowl will return to one of the elite teams in the ECHL. I know that Mr. Scheer is very competitive and is committed to bringing a winner back to Greenville, and all of the pieces will be in place to make that happen."
RICHARD NAUMANN (6-2, 200lbs, forward) signed as a free agent with the Grrrowl after ending the season with Cincinnati of the ECHL. Richard totaled 25 points (7G, 18A) in 70 total games with Dayton and Cincinnati in his rookie campaign. Naumann is a Boerne, TX native and a graduate of Sacred Heart University.
DARYL PIERCE (6-1, 220lbs., defenseman), is a rookie from Brampton, ONT who competed for four years with Canisius College, totaling 320 penalty minutes in 123 games with the Griffins. Pierce competed for the Royal Bank Cup of the Canadian Junior "A" Tier II Championships in 2000 with the Bramalea Blues.
"The addition of these three players brings a variety of skills to our hockey club," said John Marks, Grrrowl Head Coach and VP of Hockey Operations. "Colin is a solid, proven leader and a true professional. His experience and leadership will bring a strong work ethic and confidence to our organization. Richard Naumann and Daryl Pierce are two young players who we feel can compete at this level, and will only improve with hard work and ice time. Richard is someone who we have been following for quite some time, and Daryl has proven that his game is best suited for a more physical style of play that he will experience as a professional. Combined with the players from the new affiliations, this crop of players for next season is shaping up to be a solid group."
The Grrrowl will open the 2004-05 schedule with a home game on Friday, October 22, 2004 against the Charlotte Checkers. Season tickets (starting at $238), mini-plans and flex packs are available now by contacting the Grrrowl office. Please call 467-4777 for additional ticket information.
