Koenig Re-Signs for 2004-05 season
June 15, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Gulls and Trevor Koenig have agreed to terms for the 2004-05 season, head coach Martin St. Amour announced on Tuesday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Koenig, 29, re-joins the Gulls for his fifth season between the pipes. Last season, he posted a 37-7-8 record with a 2.17 goals-against average and .920 save percentage. His 37 wins were second among all ECHL goaltenders (one fewer than league leader Brian Eklund's 38), while his 2.17 GAA was fourth best in the ECHL. Koenig was also second in the league with 53 appearances and 3,154 minutes played.
During his four-year stint with San Diego (which includes three seasons in the West Coast Hockey League), Koenig has an overall record of 136-46-19 with a franchise best 2.34 GAA, .917 save percentage and 17 shutouts. He also set several league and single-season records in the now-defunct WCHL.
He said a big reason why he re-signed with the Gulls was St. Amour's promotion to head coach.
"This made it a lot easier for me to return," Koenig said. "Over the past four seasons, we've seen Martin grow an as assistant coach and then to the associate coach. He is extremely competitive, whether it's playing cards on the bus or 3-on-3 after practice and it's this kind of competitiveness that will make him succeed as a head coach.
"Along with his competitiveness, he's also learned the ins and outs of what it takes to be a good head coach. The transition between [Steve Martinson] and Martin will not be an issue and I certainly feel that the Gulls are on the right track for another successful season."
The Gulls originally acquired the 5-foot-10-inch, 185-pound native of Edmonton in December 2000 from the Idaho Steelheads. He has won 20-or-more games in each of the last four seasons, including a career high 42 in 2001-02. Koenig has won 30-or-more games in three of those seasons and was a member of two San Diego Taylor Cup Championship teams (2001 and 2003).
Koenig began his professional career with the East Coast Hockey League's Dayton Bombers in 1998-99. He has also spent time in both the International and American hockey leagues.
The Gulls open their second season in the ECHL Friday, Oct. 22 in Long Beach and open their home schedule Saturday, Oct. 23 against Fresno. Season ticket packages are currently on sale.
