Frisco RoughRiders News Release
After five innings of work, Martin Perez walked off the field with 15 straight outs. Little did he know that, with an assist from some potent storms, he would also have a perfect game. Frisco won a five-inning game 1-0 over the Arkansas Travelers after severe storms rolled through North Little Rock during the top of the sixth.
With two down and the bases empty, the umpires ordered both teams off the field because of lightning. Within ten minutes, the rain began. Shortly before 9 p.m., the game was officially called and Perez had the RoughRiders' first perfect game since July 28, 2005. On that day, three pitchers combined for a nine-inning perfect game against Corpus Christi. Perez (1-0) threw 67 pitches in the five innings. The southpaw struck out three Travelers. He also induced seven ground outs and five fly outs.
After struggling last year in Frisco, the 20-year-old has worked 13 frames in 2011 and allowed just two runs on nine hits.
The RoughRiders (5-7) scored the game's only run in the top of the first. Davis Stoneburner doubled with one out. Two batters later, Tommy Mendonca brought him in with a single to right.
In the second, Frisco stranded a pair after back-to-back two-out singles. After that, Arkansas (6-6) starter Trevor Reckling (0-3) settled down and retired the rest of the 'Riders he faced.
The RoughRiders finish their first road trip at 2-4. Frisco also owns the same mark against the Travelers thus far this season. The two clubs will not meet again until July 3.
After a day off Wednesday, the 'Riders return home to Dr Pepper Ballpark to begin South Division play against Corpus Christi. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Pre-game coverage along the RoughRiders Baseball Network gets going at 6:35.
