Perez & Areinamo Lead Comeback 'Cats to 12-9 Victory

AUGUSTA, S.C. - Hedbert Perez and Jadher Areinamo both homered in the ninth to erase a three-run deficit and force extras where the Carolina Mudcats rallied for four more runs while defeating the Augusta GreenJackets 12-9 on Sunday afternoon at SRP Park.
The Mudcats (33-28) were down 8-5 through the eighth before getting a two-run blast from Perez to get within one of the lead. Reliever Elison Joseph followed the Perez homer with consecutive strikeouts, but Areinamo followed with his solo blast on a 1-2 pitch to tie it at 8-8. The home run was Areinamo's first of the season.
Areinamo's game tying homer knocked Joseph out of the game and fellow reliever Estarlin Rodriguez would go on to finish the inning with a fly out. Rodriguez, however, returned for the tenth and went on to allow a go-ahead RBI double to Jesus Parra, and consecutive RBI singles to both Gregory Barrios and Luis Lara. Perez also drove in a run while hitting into a double play in the tenth, giving the Mudcats four runs and four hits in the extra frame. Barrios set a new career-high with four hits in the game.
Augusta managed to score once in their half of the tenth, but reliever Nick Merkel held the lead while earning the series-tying victory 12-9. Merkel (W, 1-0) originally entered in the eighth and pitched through three solid innings with just two runs (one earned) allowed on one hit.
Will Childers, pitching near his hometown, started and worked just the first while allowing three runs on three hits. Childers totaled 23 pitches (14 strikes) and faced seven batters while allowing a two-run single to Bryson Worrell and a RBI double to Jeremy Celedonio.
Carolina answered the three-run Augusta first with a game-tying three-run home run from Parra in the second. Quinton Low took over and tossed a scoreless second, but the GreenJackets went on to score once in the third when reliever Jeferson Figueroa walked two before allowing one to score on a wild pitch. Figueroa went on to toss a scoreless fourth, but allowed a home run to Worrell in the fifth.
Augusta led 5-3 through fifth before adding two runs against reliever Chase Costello in the sixth and one off Merkel in the eighth. The Mudcats, meanwhile, scored once in the sixth and once in the eighth with RBI single from Jose Sibrian and Jesus Chirinos respectively.
With the finale victory, the Mudcats ended up earning a 3-3 split in the six-game series. Carolina will return to Five County Stadium with a new six-game homestand versus the Lynchburg Hillcats on Tuesday, June 20 at 7:00 p.m.
