Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Peoria Chiefs belted three home runs Sunday, defeating the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 8-1, at Perfect Game Field. Cedar Rapids was held to only two hits in the ballgame - a solo home run by second baseman Wes Hatton and a double by David Harris. The winning pitcher for the Chiefs was starter Graham Hicks, who tossed five innings to earn his first win of the season. The left-hander struck out five batters and allowed only one run in the game.
Kernels starting pitcher Max Russell (4-4) picked up his fourth loss of the season, allowing six runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings. Peoria got on the scoreboard first, tallying five runs in the second inning thanks to a pair of home runs by Anthony Giansanti and Matt Szczur. After three straight singles from Ryan Cuneo, Micah Gibbs, and Elliot Soto, Giansanti cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field. Szczur hit the second home run of the inning three batters later to give the Chiefs the early 5-0 lead.
The Kernels cut the deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the third when Hatton hit his second home run of the season, but that would be the only offense the squad would have in the ballgame. Cuneo gave the Chiefs a 6-1 advantage with and RBI single in the fifth that brought home Pierre LePage and Giansanti homered for the second time in the game in the seventh inning - this time a two-run bomb - to give the Chiefs an 8-1 lead. Su-Min Jung threw four innings in relief for Peoria, allowing no runs and one hit while picking up his first save of the season.
The Kernels conclude the four game series with Peoria on Monday at 2:05 p.m. Come celebrate Memorial Day as the gates open at 1:00 p.m. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a free Kernels DAV baseball card set, presented by the Disabled American Veterans.
