Dragons Fall in South Bend; Second Game Postponed

South Bend, Ind.-South Bend pitchers David Holmberg and Blake Cooper combined on a three-hit shutout in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader on Sunday as the Silver Hawks defeated the Dayton Dragons 3-0. The second game was postponed and rescheduled for Monday as part of a doubleheader. Game one on Monday will start at 12:00 noon.

The loss snapped the Dragons' four-game winning streak and ended a personal winning streak for Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Corcino, who had won six straight decisions.

South Bend scored single runs in each of the first two innings, getting a pair of RBI base hits from Mike Freeman to take a 2-0 lead. The Silver Hawks closed out the scoring with one run in the fifth inning on Zach Walters' run-scoring double. The contest was a seven-inning game.

Dayton's best chance to score came in the second. Drew Poulk singled with one out and went to third on Tucker Barnhart's double to left. But Holmberg struck out Devin Lohman and Jefry Sierra to strand both runners. The Dragons did not collect another hit the rest of the game.

Corcino (6-3) pitched a complete game but took the loss. He worked six innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Dayton's three hits belonged to Poulk, Barnhart, and David Vidal. Barnhart's double extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games, matching Dominic D'Anna's longest hitting streak of the year for the Dragons.

Dayton (26-23) plays at South Bend (24-25) on Monday at 12:00 noon in a doubleheader that will wrap up the Dragons' seven-game road trip. They are 4-1 on the trip. Daniel Tuttle (4-1, 3.89) will start in game one for Dayton. Pat Doyle (2-2, 3.77) will start game two. The next home game is Tuesday, May 31 vs. the Beloit Snappers at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons consecutive game sell-out streak stands at 799, 15 short of the all-time sports record.

Notes: The Dragons had outscored their opponents 26-3 on the trip entering Sunday's game...The Dragons began the day in a three-way tie for second place in the Midwest League's East Division. The top two teams in the first half of the league's split-season format qualify for the playoffs. There are 21 games remaining to be played.
