South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks pitched a 3-0 shutout in game one of the doubleheader with the Dayton Dragons before Mother Nature took her turn on the mound and blanked both teams in game two, setting up another doubleheader on Monday afternoon.
In game one, David Holmberg (WP, 4-3) battled his way through 5.0 innings, allowing only three hits with one walk and two hit batters. The lefty struck out five in winning for the fourth time in his last five starts.
Blake Cooper (SV, 7) completed the shutout, tossing two perfect innings of relief. He improved to a perfect 7-for-7 in save opportunities and the win was South Bend's second shutout of 2011.
On the offensive side, Mike Freeman led the way with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, picking up two RBI singles early and adding a triple and a run scored late. Zach Walters also had two hits and a RBI for South Bend.
Ender Inciarte had a single, a walk, and a run scored and Jhoan Pimentel went 2-for-2 with two singles and a run as well.
The loss was pinned on Dayton starter Daniel Corcino (LP, 6-3), who went the distance in the shortened contest despite allowing three runs on eight hits. Corcino struck out eight batters in his time on the mound.
Shortly after completing game one, heavy thunderstorms and tornado warnings forced the postponement of game two. The doubleheader will take place at 12 noon tomorrow, with the gates opening at 11:30 AM Eastern Time. Pitching matchups are still to be determined. Pregame coverage begins at 11:40 AM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
Tomorrow's doubleheader will be the ninth attempt at a doubleheader for the Silver Hawks this season. They have been swept twice, split three times, twice won game one then had game two rained out, and one time both games of a doubleheader were washed away.
