
Pensacola Ice Flyers Draw Augusta in SPHL Playoffs

Pensacola, FL- The Southern Professional Hockey League announced its 2011 Playoff schedule over the weekend and the Pensacola Ice Flyers drew the expansion Augusta RiverHawks in the first round.
Pensacola, who finished the season 28-28 and fifth in the league, will take on the second seeded expansion Augusta RiverHawks, who went 35-21 on the season. The series, set up as a best of 3, will begin in Augusta on Friday, April 1. The series will continue back in The Hangar on Saturday, April 2, and then head back to Augusta, if necessary, for Game Three. Games in Augusta will begin at 7:30pm EST and the puck drops in Pensacola at 7:05pm.
Throughout the year the teams have battled five times with Pensacola coming out on top three times. Head Coach Todd Gordon said that he was excited for the opportunity to play Augusta. "We have a favorable record playing against them and though that doesn't mean anything on the ice, it certainly gives you the edge mentally. Our boys know that they can outplay anyone when we play our best. We, as a team, have to realize that season has started over and the present is all that matters. everybody is 0-0 right now," said the Head Coach/GM for the Ice Flyers.
For local fans not able to make it to Augusta for the first and, if necessary, third game, all the action can be watched at New York Nick's in Downtown Pensacola on Palafox Street.
Playoff action in the SPHL focuses on the top six teams in the league. First seed plays sixth seed in a best of five series with the winner having a bye to the finals, while two plays five and three plays four in best a best of three series. Should Pensacola advance, they would taking on the winner of the Huntsville/Columbus series and looking at a home playoff game next Tuesday, April 5 at The Hangar.
