Pens fall to Albany, 5-2

Wilkes-Barre, Pa (Sunday, October 24, 2004) – Zach Parise scored two goals during a four-goal third period to lead the Albany River Rats to a 5-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins before a sellout crowd of 8,163 at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.

With the Penguins leading 2-1 late in the third period, the River Rats scored four answered goals during a span of 4:21 to end a 10-game road winless streak (0-9-1) against the Penguins. Albany's last win in Wilkes-Barre was a 5-2 victory on March 12, 2000.

Albany took a 1-0 lead late in the first period on David Hale's first goal of the season at 17:20. But the Penguins answered back just 1:08 later on Michel Ouellet's power play goal. Less than a minute into Aaron Voros' high-sticking penalty, the Penguins tied the game on Ouellet's third goal of the season at 18:28.

After a scoreless second period, the Penguins took a 2-1 lead early in the third period on Tomas Surovy's second goal of the season. On a 2-on-1 break, Surovy took a pass from Shane Endicott and snapped a wrist shot past Scott Clemmensen for the goal 1:35 into the period.

With a little over five minutes left in regulation, Bobby Allen tied the game with his second goal of the season at 14:39. The River Rats then took control of the game as Parise scored his second goal of the season 1:04 later to give Albany a 3-2 lead. Then, with 1:05 left, Parise added an empty net goal to give the River Rats' a commanding 4-2 lead. Aaron Voros closed out the scoring with his fourth goal of the season at 19:20 to make it 5-2.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 26 saves, while Scott Clemmensen stopped 23 of 25 shots to improve his record to 2-2 on the season.

With the win, the first-place River Rats' improved to 4-1-1 (nine points) on the season, while the Penguins fell to 1-4-1 (three points). Tomas Surovy led the Penguins with a goal and an assist in the loss.

The Penguins continue their homestand on Wednesday when they host the Syracuse Crunch (7:05 p.m. start). The first 5,000 fans will receive a baseball cap, courtesy of Dodge. Plenty of good seats are still available for the game.

Scratches for the Penguins were Drew Fata (healthy), Ross Lupaschuk (knee), Ben Eaves (knee) and Cam Paddock (healthy) ...
