Penny Hardaway to Smash Guitar at Tomorrow's Memphis-Nashville Match
July 16, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Memphis 901 FC News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Bluff City is all-in to Defend Memphis in tomorrow's rivalry match with Nashville SC at AutoZone Park.
Memphis Tigers men's basketball coach Penny Hardaway is scheduled to smash the guitar at the start of the match, presented by Memphis Travel. Beginning with the Club's inaugural match in March, a different figure has smashed a guitar on the field right before kickoff to culminate pregame ceremonies and hype the crowd for the start of the match. As the home of the blues, soul, and the birthplace of rock and roll, there is no better place for this matchday tradition than Memphis.
The first 1,000 fans at the match will receive an exclusive green "Defend Memphis" t-shirt in the team's font with the crest on the chest, compliments of Terminix. Gates open at 6:00, and the match is scheduled for a 7:30 first touch.
With Nashville SC moving to MLS next season, tomorrow's match is potentially the only time 901 FC fans will experience the Memphis-Nashville rivalry while both are competing in the USL Championship.
Tickets for the match are available at www.memphis901fc.com/tickets.
In its most recent match, 901 FC exploded for four goals in a 4-1 win over Hartford Athletic July 6. It was Memphis' second four-goal performance in its last six competitions and was highlighted by Elliot Collier's hat trick.
Memphis and Nashville played earlier this season in Nashville, which was a 2-0 win for the home club. Since then, however, 901 FC has a new look in multiple ways. The previous match against Nashville was Cam Lindley's team debut, and since then the club has also added playmakers Jochen Graf, Lagos Kunga, and Brandon Allen as the offense has begun opening up.
Lindley, Graf, Kunga, and Allen have accounted for two goals and three assists in key minutes of action since their arrivals.
Memphis has scored 17 goals in its last 10 matches, which is more than double the club's output through its first 10 matches of the season (8). The recent stretch includes five multi-goal performances where the club went 4-0-1. Memphis had just two multi-goal showings in its first 10 matches and did not win either outing.
After tomorrow, 901 FC remains at AutoZone Park on Saturday to host New York Red Bulls II, as well as on Saturday, July 27 to welcome Ottawa Fury FC.
