Penguins Tough out Win Versus Falcons

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins completed their five-game homestand with 5-3 victory over the Springfield Falcons on Sunday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Down by a score of 3-2 after two periods of play, the Penguins found the equalizer three minutes into the frame. Ryan Craig swept a turnaround pass from below the right circle that Brian Gibbons slapped home from in close for his 11th marker of the season.
Alex Grant potted the deciding tally, coming off the bench to accept a feed from Zach Sill and fire a rocket from just inside the blueline that flew by a screened Mike Clemente in net for Springfield at 7:39.
The Penguins wrapped the scoring with an empty-goal from Brian Strait, his fourth of the year.
With the game tied, 1-1, going into the second period, a pair of odd-man rushes quickly put the Falcons ahead by two. Alexandre Giroux finished a 2-on-1 with Maksim Mayorov at 2:33 of the third and, less than five minutes later, Dane Byers found the back of the net to put the Penguins on their heels.
Twelve minutes in middle period, Bryan Lerg got Wilkes-Barre/Scranton back within a single goal as a double deflection shot from the point dropped at his feet with a wide-open net into which he deposited his 24th goal of the season.
It was the opposition scoring first for the fourth straight game as Springfield broke up a promising Penguins rush and transitioned the other way 3-on-1. Matt Calvert completed the chance himself with a wrister past the glove of Patrick Killeen at 6:13.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton responded at 9:10 of the same period when Clemente stopped Simon Despres' point shot, but Lerg swept the rebound to the far post for an easy tap-in by Jason Williams. The tally by Williams ended a scoring drought of 137:12 for the Penguins that spanned back to March 18 against Binghamton.
Killeen recorded his second win of the season - both coming against Springfield - with 23 saves on 26 shots. He also denied Mayorov on a penalty shot at 3:56 of the second period. Clemente suffered his first loss as a Falcon, stopping 26-of-30.
