Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins saw their season-high point streak reach six games, but were unable to fend off a rally by the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and fell in the shootout, 5-4, on Pink in the Rink Night on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Trailing by a score of 2-1 after the first, the Penguins needed only 57 seconds of the second period to pull even as Taylor Chorney sprung Conor Sheary behind the Lehigh Valley defense and the rookie forward wristed home his team-leading 16th goal of the season.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went ahead for the first time in the match during a two-man advantage as Bryan Rust rifled home a one-time shot from the left dot at 7:50 of the frame.

Jason Akeson helped Lehigh Valley respond at 11:59 right after a 5-on-3 power play expired, sneaking a snapshot through the pads of a screened Jeff Zatkoff.

Bobby Farnham put the Penguins back on top, 4-3, just 71 seconds later as he outmuscled his man in front of the Phantoms net and tipped Nick D'Agostino's point shot over the left shoulder of Lehigh Valley goalie Rob Zepp.

Holding on to the one-goal lead in the third period, the Penguins would find themselves on their heels after giving the Phantoms three consecutive power plays. Lehigh Valley converted 19 seconds into the third opportunity as Akeson tallied his second of the night and knotted the score with 9:04 remaining, roofing a shoot from the left circle.

The 4-4 deadlock would finally be decided in the shootout, where Petr Straka and Rust traded goals through the first three rounds. In round four, D'Agostino fired wide of Zepp's net before Leier closed out the game for the Phantoms with a wrist shot past the blocker of Zatkoff.

It was the Phantoms jumping out to the 1-0 lead 4:54 into the contest after Nick Cousins had wrist shot from the left circle stopped in front, but Leier swooped in to clean up the rebound.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was able to tie the score with its first power play goal of the night, coming on a Tom Kostopoulos redirect at 13:18 of the same period. Just over three minutes later, Phantoms defenseman Adam Comrie pounced on a turnover in the high slot and blasted a slapshot to the back of the net.

Zatkoff fell to 12-10-4 on the season as he made 34 saves on 39 shots through overtime and stopped 2-of-4 in the shootout. Zepp turned aside 31-of-35 and allowed just one goal against four Penguins shooters.

The Penguins complete the four-game homestand next Saturday, Feb. 21 when they take on the Providence Bruins at 7:05 p.m.
