St. John's IceCaps News Release
Gus Young, Trevor Parkes and Bryan Lerg each recorded a goal as the Worcester Sharks topped the St. John's IceCaps 3-1 at Mile One Centre on Saturday night.
Austen Brassard replied with his third of the year for the IceCaps, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
Aaron Dell was solid between between the pipes for Worcester and finished the night with 24 saves, while the IceCaps' Connor Hellebuyck was the busier of the two tenders and stopped 28 of the 31 shots he faced.
The Sharks opened the scoring on the power play with 7:28 left in the opening frame as Gus Young perfectly one-timed a pass at the top of the circle from Konrad Abeltshauser that beat Hellebuyck high on the glove side.
The Sharks added to their lead with 7:47 into the second period as Trevor Parkes showed off his speed and completed a wraparound that beat Hellebuyck far side for his first goal of the season and the two-goal lead.
The lead was pushed to three just over a minute later as Sharks captain Bryan Lerg was parked in front of the net and tapped home a puck that squeezed through Hellebuyck's pads at 13:40.
Brassard got his team on the board in the third period on a rebound from a Chase Balisy shot that bounced off Dell's pads and on the stick of Brassard, who rifled the puck behind the goaltender at 8:38 to give the IceCaps some life.
The IceCaps had plenty of chances to come back in the final frame, including several hit posts and two power plays but were unable to convert, giving the Sharks the victory.
The IceCaps and Sharks are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, February 15, for an afternoon matinee at 4:00 p.m. NST at Mile One Centre to complete their two-game set.
