Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - After trailing 3-0 in the second period, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins battled back to even the score and eventually take a 5-4 shootout victory against the Manchester Monarchs at Verizon Wireless Arena.
Penalty trouble in the first period for the Penguins gave the Monarchs a 5-on-3 power play and the chance to take the early lead. Manchester would capitalize at 7:56 when Bryan Rodney hit Brandon Kozun on the low post for a one-time shot that zipped past Jeff Zatkoff.
The Monarchs then doubled its lead three minutes later during a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton man-advantage as Stefan Legein went end-to-end for a shorthanded breakaway tally.
Manchester recorded its second shorthanded goal of the contest with Robbie Czarnik following up a rebound and wrapping it inside the post to make the score, 3-0, at 7:21 of the middle period.
Later in the frame, it took only 28 seconds for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to cut Manchester's lead down to one.
With 3:49 left until the intermission, Riley Holzapfel zipped a shot toward Monarchs goalie Martin Jones that skimmed off the skate of Chad Kolarik and into the net. On the next shift, Bobby Farnham dumped the puck in on Jones and, in the ensuing scrum, Zach Sill stuffed it across the goal line..
After Andy Andreoff finished off a 2-on-1 rush at 5:28 of the third to put Manchester back up by two, Sill notched his second goal of the game midway through the period to pull Wilkes-Barre Scranton back within one.
The Penguins would guarantee themselves at least one point as Kolarik fed Dylan Reese pinching down from the point and the defenseman roofed a shot over Jones to tie the score, 4-4, with 4:10 left in regulation.
The two teams would need the shootout to decide the victor and it was Wilkes-Barre/Scranton that gathered the second point. Zatkoff denied all four Manchester shooters, while Holzapfel and Trevor Smith scored in rounds three and four, respectively, to lift the Penguins to the win.
Zatkoff stopped 24-of-28 shots through overtime and is 3-0-0 this season versus Manchester.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are back on the ice on Wednesday, March 13 at 7:00 PM as they face the Worcester Sharks. Tune in on 102.3 The Mountain or AHLLive.com.
