Pirates, Sharks Clash in Final Regular Season Battle
March 10, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
Worcester, MA - The Portland Pirates and Worcester Sharks will meet for the final time this regular season this afternoon as the DCU Center in Worcester. Puck drop is set for 3 PM. The Pirates are 6-4-0-1 against the Sharks this season.
Portland looks to bounce back from two straight overtime losses at home, both by 4-3 scores. On Friday, the Manchester Monarchs came back from a 3 goal deficit to defeat the Pirates on an overtime goal from Stefan Legin. In Saturday night's contest, an extremely emotional battle between the Pirates and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins ended with a Chad Kolarik goal just 38 seconds into the extra frame. 4 of the last 5 Pirates home games have gone to extra time, with the Pirates just 1-3 in that stretch.
Worcester also dropped a decision in added time last night, a 4-3 shootout loss to the Atlantic Division leading Providence Bruins. The Sharks put 48 shots on net during regulation and overtime, but were only able to get 3 shots past Niklas Svedberg. Denny Urban scored the only shootout goal for the Sharks to force the shootout into sudden death, but former Pirate Trent Whitfield would get the game winner for providence in the 7th round.
This is the 12th and final time the Sharks and Pirates will face off this season. In their last contest, the Sharks defeated the Pirates 2-1 in a shootout at the Cumberland County Civic Center, with Marek Viedensky scoring the game winner in the shootout. Chris Conner has been the Pirates' leader against the Sharks this season, scoring 4 goals and adding 6 assists in 11 games played.
The game can be heard on 95.5 and 95.9 WPEI in the Portland area, 92.7FM and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area, and online on the WLOB radio player and AHL Live. The pregame show starts at 2:40 with Jeff Mannix.
