Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI -- The Providence Bruins fell to the Connecticut Whale 4-2 this afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Alden Hirschfeld and Maxime Sauvé scored and Michael Hutchinson made 22 saves in the loss.
Hutchinson got the nod for his third start against the Whale of the season and his second in the weekend, the first time all season he was started in both home games on Friday and Sunday. In his last start against the Whale before Christmas, Hutchinson helped Providence to win 3-1. The goaltender stood tall in the first period, facing nine shots in the opening 10 minutes as the Bruins spent a lot of time in their own end. Providence turned the game around in the second half of the period, soon surpassing Connecticut in shots and also keeping them from putting up more than one other shot for the remainder of the period. Jamie Tardif took a roughing penalty with about six minutes to go in the period and before the penalty kill units killed it off, Chris Kreider took a high sticking penalty to give Providence their first power play. Craig Cunningham and Ryan Spooner each had good chances as the clock ticked down for the period but the opening frame would end with both teams scoreless.
Providence continued putting up shots in the second period looking to get on the board first. Tyler Randell took it upon himself to fire up his team in a bout with Blake Parlett with an easy take down and the fight gives Randell his fourth fight in just as many games. Randell got an extra two minutes for roughing but Providence killed it off and then 15 seconds after it expired Chris Bourque sent a beautiful pass across the middle to Hirschfeld who beat Jason Missiaen (37 saves) to make it 1-0. The secondary assist went to Torey Krug. The 6'8" goaltender really kept his team in the game from there as Providence kept throwing pucks on net. Late in the period the Bruins almost extended their lead when Bourque and Spooner had a 2-on-1 chance but was denied. Soon after that chance Spooner headed to the box for slashing and Kris Newbury went off for diving for two minutes of 4-on-4 hockey. Less than a minute into the penalties, Mike Vernace set up in front of Hutchinson and immediately knocked the puck in the net as soon as he received a pass. Following the goal, Sauve took a slashing penalty to join Spooner in the box but the penalty kill killed it off. Spooner had a chance when he came out of the box but shot too high as he came in on Missiaen and the score would stay at 1-1 heading into the second intermission.
Both teams came out firing on all cylinders for the final period of play. It worked against the Whale when Brandon Segal tripped up a Providence player and was sent to the box. Only moments into the power play Sauve got possession of the puck and tapped it into the net just next to the left post to make it 2-1. Assists went to Christian Hanson and Zach Trotman. Only 30 seconds later, Andrew Yogan beat Hutchinson to tie the game. The Whale got on the board again from Kyle Palmieri at 7:43 to pull ahead with the lead. The effort kept coming from the Bruins as soon after Krug took on Kyle Jean and got the take down. Both were assessed roughing penalties and Jean got a double minor to give the Bruins another power play chance. The man advantage actually worked against Providence as Newbury had a breakaway chance but was tripped up and awarded a penalty shot. Hutchinson stood tall and deflected the backhand shot from Newbury to keep it just 3-2. Providence tried to even out the score with an extra skater in the final minute but Connecticut took control of the play and hit the empty net to make it 4-2 which would be the final score.
