Aeros Edged by Checkers 2-1 in a Shootout

Charlotte, NC - The Houston Aeros (29-21-4-4, 66 points) were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers (35-19-2-3, 75 points) 2-1 in a shootout on Saturday night in front of 12,027 fans at the Time Warner Cable Arena. Charlotte goalie John Muse (5-2-0) stopped 31 of 32 in regulation and all four Houston attempts to secure the shootout victory. Forward David Marshall scored the team's lone goal in regulation and the decisive goal in the shootout, helping the Checkers improve to 15-11-0-1 at home this season. Houston goalie John Curry (0-0-1) made 33 saves on 34 shots in regulation and stopped two of three in the shootout defeat. Left wing Matt Kassian tallied his first goal of the season, as the Aeros slipped to 15-13-2-2 on the road this year. The Aeros conclude their four-game road trip Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT) in Charlotte.

After a scoreless first period of play, Houston opened the scoring at 4:22 of the second period. Winger Matt Kassian ripped a wrist shot from the left wing, banking a shot off the pads of the goalie John Muse for the 1-0 Aeros lead. Kassian's first goal of the year was set up by Ryley Grantham and Paul Mara. The Checkers pulled even at 15:33 of the middle period. David Marshall rifled a shot at the Aeros net. His shot deflected off a Houston defender and past goalie John Curry. Brett Bellemore and David Rutherford each had an assist on Marshall's first goal of the season.

After a scoreless third period and overtime, the two teams skated to a shootout. Charlotte's David Marshall scored on one of the Checkers three shootout attempts on John Curry. After the third attempt, Curry left the game with an apparent injury and was relieved by Cody Reichard. Brett Sutter tallied on his shootout attempt against Reichard to help Charlotte win the shootout 2-0. Goalie John Muse was perfect in the shootout, giving Charlotte the win with four saves on four shots.

Houston and Charlotte will have a rematch on Sunday, Mar. 10 at 2 p.m., rounding out a two-game set at Time Warner Cable Arena. The Aeros return home on Thursday, Mar. 14 at 7:05 p.m. as Houston hosts Abbotsford at Toyota Center. The game marks a "Thirsty Thursday", where fans may take their ticket stub to The Maple Leaf Pub (Smith and Elgin). The first 500 fans to The Maple Leaf Pub will receive a second drink free with their ticket stub.
