Albany River Rats News Release
ALBANY, NY-Penguins goaltender Brad Thiessen turned-aside 38 shots and forward Luca Caputi scored a goal and added an assist as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defeated the Albany River Rats 3-1 in front of 5,141 spectators Saturday night at the Times Union Center.
Albany trailed 2-1 heading into the final frame and the home team peppered the Penguins goal with fourteen shots, but Thiessen gobbled-up everything that came his way and former River Rat Ryan Bayda sealed the game with an empty-net goal.
Caputi drew first blood at 3:11 of the second period, forcing-home a power play rebound past Albany goalie Mike Murphy. Defenseman Zach Fitzgerald responded for Albany midway through the frame with a long wrist-shot -that found its way through a Matthew Pistilli screen, off of the crossbar and in for his second of the season. The Penguins reclaimed their one-goal lead at 12:10, when Caputi found Eric Tangradi streaking towards the net for the eventual game-winner.
Albany out-shot the visitors 14-11 in a high-octane first period that saw two fights in the opening 2:29 and a third before the frame was through. Both goalies shined in the high-energy stanza to keep the game scoreless through 20 minutes.
Penguins goalie Brad Thiessen stopped 38-of-39 shots to earn the win as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton improved to 8-4-1-1 on the season. River Rats goaltender Mike Murphy blocked 28-of-30 shots and took the loss as Albany fell to 7-7-0-2 this season. The River Rats out-shot the Penguins 39-31 in the contest and went 0-for-4 on the power play; Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 1-for-2 with the man-advantage.
The River Rats return to the Times Union Center tomorrow night for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Norfolk Admirals. River Rats 2009-10 season and flex ticket packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com.
