WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers, the "AA" affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers, announced today that the Penguins have assigned defenseman Paul Bissonnette to Wheeling for the upcoming season.

Bissonnette, 22, played 65 games for the Nailers last season and was named to the American Conference All-Star Team. He registered 42 points (10g, 32a) from the blue line which ranked him 14th in scoring among defenseman in the ECHL.

"Paul is a number one defenseman in this league," said Nailers President Jim Brooks. "Our defense was already in very good shape but the addition of Bissonnette elevates our team to an even higher level."

Selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fourth round (#121 overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Bissonnette has played 137 games in his professional career split between the AHL (58) with Wilkes-Barre Scranton and the ECHL (79) with the Nailers.

Bissonnette has been in camp with Pittsburgh for each of the past four seasons and was one of the final players removed from camp in 2004. He played four seasons in the OHL between North Bay, Saginaw and Owen Sound.

Wheeling will play two preseason games this weekend against the Johnstown Chiefs. Saturday night's game will take place at WesBanco Arena and all tickets are only $5.

The Nailers will open the ECHL's 20th Anniversary season with a game against the Johnstown Chiefs on Oct. 18th. It will be a rematch of Game 7 from the first-ever ECHL Finals. Wheeling will open their home schedule on Oct. 26 against the South Carolina Stingrays.
