Pence's Blast Not Enough To Save Legends

The Lake County Captains rallied to stun the Lexington Legends 4-3 on Saturday night. The Captains scored two runs, one unearned in the ninth inning to slip by the Legends. The loss was the second straight for Lexington, dropping the Legends to 5-4 in the second half.

Lexington took a 3-2 lead into the ninth thanks to a two-run, home run by Hunter Pence to centerfield. The blast traveled 423 feet. It was the 24th home run of the year for Pence leaving him one shy of Beau Hearod's club record set in 2005.

Lexington scored the games first run in the first inning. Ole Sheldon's double play ground ball scored Bryan Triplett from third. A two out, two run double in the second inning by Juan Valdez gave the Captains their first lead at 2-1.

It remained that way until Pence' blast in the eighth. Down 3-2, Andrew Alvarado walked Marshal Szabo start the top of the ninth inning for the Captains. Chad Reinke relieved Alvarado and Szabo advanced to second on Jose Ortega's ground out.

Valdez' second double scored Szabo to tie the game at three. Valdez scored on a throwing error by Drew Sutton on a potential inning ending double play ball to give the Captains the lead right back at 4-3.

Chad Reineke (6-4) suffered the after giving up an unearned run. Kyle Collins (3-4) suffered a blown save but got the win instead. Kieran Mattison picked up his 14th save of the season.

The series finale is set for Sunday evening at 6:05. Garrett Murdy and Cody Bunkleman will hook up. The Legends network coverage will begin at 5:50 with the Progressive Direct pre-game show. Post game 3rd of July fireworks will follow the game at Applebee's Park.
