Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Ben Pelletier saved the day in the top of the 10th and won the game in the bottom as Lakewood topped Greenville 7-6 to complete a four-game sweep of the Drive.
Pelletier made a diving catch with the go-ahead run at third base in the top of the 10th. Then, with one out and Yerwin Trejo at third, he singled down the third base line to bring in the winning run. Third baseman Jonathan Ortega made a diving stop of the ball but his throw was late and Trejo slid home with the winner.
The BlueClaws (16-20/45-61) swept the four-game series from Greenville (16-22/48-60) and went 6-1 on their seven-game homestand.
Devon Fisher (0-1) took the loss while Albertus Barber (2-0) threw two scoreless innings to earn the win.
Trailing 6-4, the BlueClaws came back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-rund ouble by McCarthy Tatum. He drove in Ben Pelletier, who had doubled, and Jonathan Guzman, who had walked, all with two outs.
The Drive took the lead in the top of the fifth on an inside-the-park from catcher Kole Cottom. The ball bounced off the top of the right field wall and rolled all the way down towards the BlueClaws bullpen. Cottom raced around the bases and slid in ahead of the tag to put the Drive up 6-4.
After Greenville scored three times to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth, the BlueClaws responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jonathan Guzman's RBI double put the BlueClaws within 4-2. Rafael Marchan followed with a two-run double to tie the game at four.
Lakewood starter Jhordany Mezquita gave up four runs, three earned, in four innings. He walked two and struck out four. Dominic Pipkin came on in the fifth and allowed two runs over four innings of work, walking one and striking out two.
Jonathan Ortega had a two-run single for the Drive in their three-run fourth inning.
Jonathan Guzman, McCarthy Tatum, Luis Garcia, and Ben Pelletier all had two hits for the BlueClaws in the win.
The BlueClaws head to Augusta and after a day off on Tuesday, will open a three-game series with the GreenJackets on Wednesday night. RHP Francisco Morales (1-5) starts the series opener for the BlueClaws.
