Bush and Schmidt Named Back-To-Back Pitchers of the Week
July 29, 2019 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE - The Asheville Tourists have been playing some really good baseball over the past month and one of the reasons for their success has been the emergence of the pitching staff. That pitching staff received a double-dose of recognition by the South Atlantic League over the last two weeks.
Left-hander Nick Bush was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 22-28. Bush made one start last week and turned in a complete game three-hit shutout against the league's number one offense in the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Bush's dominance, which included seven strikeouts, helped the Tourists sweep a double-header on the road.
Another Tourists lefty, Colten Schmidt, was named the SAL top pitcher for the week of July 15-21. Schmidt, who earned a promotion to High-A Lancaster, posted the first nine-inning complete game shutout by a Tourists pitcher since 2015. Schmidt's historic outing came on July 17 on the road against the Greenville Drive. Colten limited the home team to only two hits and lowered his league-leading ERA on the season to 1.95.
The Tourists have now had three pitchers win the South Atlantic League's Pitcher of the Week award in 2019. Ryan Rolison, who is also now with Lancaster, won the award during the week of April 15-21. Asheville has had one member of their offensive unit win Player of the Week this year; Willie MacIver during the first week of the season.
Asheville returns to McCormick Field to open up a seven-game homestand on Wednesday, July 31 to take on the Lexington Legends for three games followed by a four game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws.
