Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The Pensacola Pelicans bats come alive for the second straight night to beat the Saltdogs 7-5. Pensacola only needed one inning tonight, scoring all seven runs in the fourth frame to tame the Saltdogs.
The Saltdogs struck first in the top of the second inning. Aduardo Rios doubled down the third base line past a diving Aranguren to lead off the inning. Rios advanced to third on a groundout to second by Felix Jose and was brought home on a base hit through the left side by Anthony Contreras
In the bottom of the fourth the Pelican offense exploded scoring seven runs on six hits and two walks. The Pelicans got the inning going on a scorching solo homerun by Brandon Sing over left field wall. Matt Pali followed up with a walk and a pair of singles by Cesar Aranguren and Billy Cox to load the bases with one out. With two outs the Pelicans took the lead on a Will Lewis walk to score Pali. The next batter, Sean Gamble knocked a single through the right side to drive in Aranguren and Cox to make it 4-1 Pelicans.
After a pitching change the Pelicans kept putting on the pressure. Cordova poked a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield to score Lewis. Alvarez followed up and hit a double off the right center field wall to score Gamble and Cordova. On the night, Alvarez went 2-4 with two RBI.
The Saltdogs struck right back with a four run inning in the top of fifth. Ross McCoy lined a single up the middle with one out. Ben Tinius followed up with a four pitch walk and Johnny Kaplan legged out an infield singled to load the bases. Pelicans starting pitcher Dane DeValk hit the next batter, Luis Perez, to force in a run. Dustin Yount then belted a bases clearing double off the center field fence to score Tinius, Kaplan, and Perez. Pelicans put in sidearm reliever Carl Scheafer to minimize the damage.
The Saltdogs threaten again in the top of the ninth with bases loaded and one out but Pels closer Dustin Cameron worked his way out of a jam to end the game.
Carl Scheafer pitched three and third innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season and Cameron recorded his first save.
Clegg Snipes will take the mound for Pensacola against Lincoln's Ryan Trytten on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. at Pelican Park in Pensacola, FL.
