Diablos win 7-6

The El Paso Diablos picked up their first victory of the season, a 7-6 decision over the Shreveport Sports on Friday night from Cohen Stadium.

El Paso got to the Sports in the bottom of the first inning. Kory Drew laced an RBI double to left and Walter Olmstead had a sacrifice fly elevating the Diablos to a 2-0 lead. El Paso stretched the lead to 3-0 with a Stantrel Smith sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.

Shreveport reached the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. Adam Hale drove in Justin Humphries from third base on a ground out. One batter later Bryan Cooksey stroked a single to left field for plating Tommy Bryant and cutting the lead to 3-2.

J.D Reininger powered the Diablos to a 5-2 advantage in the bottom of the fourth. Reininger blasted a two-run homer in the frame. Walter Olmstead blasted an RBI triple to right field giving El Paso a 6-2 margin in the bottom of the fifth.

The Shreveport Sports crept back in the bottom of the seventh. Justin Humphries ripped an RBI single past the third baseman Bryon Smith scoring Deacon Burns and trimming the deficit to 6-3.

Shreveport cut the lead to 7-6 in the top of the eight inning. The Sports benefited from four walks by a combination of Jimmy Holm and Chris Thompson. Chris Thompson induced an inning ending 6-3-2 double play to get the Diablos out of major trouble with two runners on.

Chris Thompson threw a scoreless ninth inning to ease the Diablos to their first victory of the season. Thompson gets credit for the save.

Beau Hintz (1-0) gets the victory as he threw five and two third innings allowing two runs off of 10 hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Russell Savickas takes the loss (0-1), he threw five innings allowing six runs off of seven hits with two walks and one strikeout.

The Diablos will take on the Shreveport Sports at 7:05PM on Saturday night from Cohen Stadium. Justin Knoff takes the hill for El Paso and he will be opposed by Justin Phillips. The game will be broadcast live at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
