Pelicans win 6-5 in walk-off fashion

Ricardo Cordova had a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Pensacola Pelicans a 6-5 victory over the El Paso Diablos in the series finale from Pelican Park on Sunday night.

Pensacola scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning. Beau Hintz allowed a lead off single to Matt Pali and walked three Pelicans to score the first run of the game.

The Diablos responded in the top of the fourth inning. Bryon Smith led off the frame with a solo-homer to left field. Stantrel Smith hit a sacrifice fly to center field plating Matt Kent for the go ahead run and the 2-1 advantage.

The Pelicans tied it up in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rafael Alvarez had an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the inning, knotting the score at 2-2.

El Paso took the lead in the top of the seventh. Kory Drew ripped a double down the left field line scoring Albenis Machado for the 3-2 edge.

Pensacola tied up the contest in the bottom of the seventh. Ceasar Aranguren smoked an RBI single into center field, knotting up the game at three.

The Diablos had a two-run eighth inning to take the lead. Stantrel Smith and Albenis Machado had RBI singles, giving the Diablos a 5-3 lead.

The Pelicans would win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Billy Cox belted a two-run homer off of Chris Thompson tieing the game. With the bases loaded Ricardo Cordova poked a walk-off RBI single to left field scoring Dylan Parzyk for the victory.

Dustin Cameron (1-0) takes the victory, he threw a scoreless ninth inning.

Chris Thompson (2-1) takes the loss, he lasted two thirds of an inning yielding three runs off of three hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Beau Hintz threw five innings allowing two runs off of five hits with seven walks and four strikeouts.

Dane DeValk tossed four innings allowing two earned runs off of six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Diablos will take Memorial Day off before opening up a three game series against the St. Paul Saints on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM at Cohen Stadium. The game will be broadcast live at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
