Pelicans Sweep P-Nats With Win In Longest Game Of 2014

WOODBRIDGE, VA. (JULY 30, 2014) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, knocked off the Potomac Nationals in a 16-inning affair 10-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Pfitzner Stadium. Lewis Brinson launched a grand slam in the top of the sixteenth frame to put the Pelicans ahead, who swept the Nationals in Woodbridge for the first time since 2006.

The Pelicans (21-19, 66-43) never trailed on Wednesday. The club led 1-0, 2-1, by as many as five runs at 6-1, and ultimately by a 10-6 score.

With two outs in the ninth inning, Jose Leclerc surrendered a two-run blast to the Nationals center fielder Issac Ballou to tie things up at 6-6. The blown save was only Leclerc's second this year, and set up extra-innings.

The two clubs went scoreless over the first six extra frames despite both teams getting chances to break the deadlock, especially in the eleventh inning. Both the Pelicans and the Nationals put two in scoring position with only one out in the stanza but failed to score.

Ultimately, the Nationals (20-18, 58-49) were relegated to turning over the pitching duties to infielder Khayyan Norfork. He tossed a 1-2-3 inning the in the fifteenth, but the Birds got to him in the sixteenth. Preston Beck singled to open the inning. Royce Bolinger laced a double to right center on the first pitch he saw to put Beck at third. The P-Nats then intentionally walked Nick Williams. With the based loaded and nobody out, Brinson smashed a 2-1 offering from Norfork over the center field fence to put the Birds ahead 10-6.

Josh McElwee completed his outing with a perfect bottom half to finish off the Nationals. He faced nine batters and retired them all and has not allowed a run in 11 innings for the Pelicans this season.

Myrtle Beach was in a position to win it before the bullpen surrendered five runs in the final two innings. Pelicans starter Ryan Bores fired seven innings of one-run ball. The outing was the longest of his career. He scattered six hits and a walk and struck out a pair.

He left in-line for the win with his team ahead 6-1. With a two-run lead in the seventh, the Pelicans tacked on four runs off of southpaw Kylin Turnbill to move ahead 6-1. The lead was trimmed by three in the eighth by the Nationals and the homer in the ninth tied it.

The game was the longest this year for Myrtle Beach and longest since 2011, when the Pelicans lost a 23-inning affair at Kinston. The game on Wednesday lasted four hours and 41 minutes.

The win also gave the Pelicans an 8-2 record at Pfitzner Stadium this season, the club's best mark there since 2006.

McElwee (1-0) earned the win in relief, while Norfork (0-1) picked up the loss in his professional pitching debut.

After an off day on Thursday, the Pelicans open a three-game set on Friday night against the Salem Red Sox.
