Carolina Mudcats News Release
The Series vs Salem -- The Mudcats square off against the Salem Red Sox for the final time in 2014 at LewisGale Field this week. With one win the series, the Red Sox can clinch their third consecutive season series against Carolina. Salem is 10-17 at Salem Memorial Ballpark against the Mudcats and leads the all-time series 36-22.
Last Time Out -- Carolina snapped their season-long, six-game losing streak with a convincing 5-1 win over the Salem Red Sox at LewisGale Field. Adam Plutko yielded just five base runners on singles and one unearned run across seven innings. The victory was the right-hander's third with Carolina. Jeremy Lucas plated two runs with two hits and Yandy Diaz collected three hits.
Today's Pitching Probables -- Cole Sulser makes his third start against Salem, but his first at LewisGale Field. He is 0-1 against the Sox with a 4.23 ERA. The right-hander allowed six runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings in his last appearance against Wilmington. Sulser is 3-9 with a 5.29 ERA through 19 starts. This is only the third daytime start for Sulser. Simon Mercedes makes his third start against the Mudcats. He owns an 0-2 mark with a 4.70 ERA (9H, 4ER, 7.2IP). For the season, Salem's righty has appeared in 13 games and started eight. Mercedes is 2-7 and shoulders a 4.64 ERA.
Keeping a Grip -- A six-game losing streak dropped the Mudcats back to the pack in the Carolina League South- ern Division race. The Mudcats are tied with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans for the top spot. As for playoff implications, the Winston-Salem Dash are now within a 0.5 game of the Mudcats and the Salem Red Sox trail by 3.5 games. The Mudcats last appeared in the postseason as a Double-A affiliate of the Florida (now Miami) Marlins in 2007. Station to Station -- The Mudcats collected 13 singles in Tuesday's win. Though the club has totaled 65 hits over their last five games (13 per contest), 56 of them are singles. The Mudcats have launched three home runs and smacked six doubles during this span. All the base runners have helped Carolina pace the circuit for batting aver- age (.269) and on-base percentage (.349). Their 408 walks are also a CL best.
Indians MiLB Player of the Week -- Catcher Jeremy Lucas received the Cleveland Indians' MiLB Player of the Week honor for his efforts July 21-27. The West Terre Haute, Indiana, native hit .407 (11x27) for the week and cracked four doubles, belted his second grand slam of 2014 on July 25 at Potomac and collected five RBI. Lucas leads the Mudcats in doubles (24), home runs (9), RBI (53) and walks (48). Lucas, 23, has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games, hitting .355 over that span. The backstop leads all CL catchers with a .993 fielding percentage and has thrown out 22% of runners attempting to steal, good for the fifth-best rate on the circuit.
Lee Locked In -- Jacob Lee ran his string of innings without allowing an earned run to 22.1 with a scoreless ap- pearance on Tuesday night. Across his last 14 appearances, Lee has allowed just two unearned runs and opposing hitters have not earned a run against him since June 10. The righty has lowered his ERA to 2.75.
Muddy's Tales -- The Mudcats host the Potomac Nationals for three games August 1-3. The series will feature Fireworks Friday and Muddy's Birthday Bash with a 7 p.m. start on August 1. It's a 6 p.m. start for Military Ap- preciation Night on Saturday, August 2. The series with Potomac concludes with Kids Run The Bases, presented by Amerigas, and an appearance by Bob Harris, the "Voice of the Duke Blue Devils," on Sunday, August 3 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling (919) 269-2287 or by visiting carolinamudcats.com.
