Carolina Mudcats News Release

Salem, Va. - The Carolina Mudcats earned a season-high 12 walks and collected 14 hits in a 13-6 rout of the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon at LewisGale Field. The Mudcats (21-18, 50-56) claimed their third series in the Roanoke Valley since the clubs began play in 2012. The Red Sox dipped to 16-22 in the second half and 49-57 overall.

Cole Sulser (4-9) posted another quality start in the victory. The right-hander yielded three runs on five hits and his 6 1/3 innings pitched marked his longest career outing. Sulser fanned three and walked two. Simon Mercedes (2-8) absorbed five runs on four hits in the loss. He walked three without recording a strikeout in just 1 1/3 innings.

Salem opened the scoring in the first when Jantzen Witte singled home Carlos Asuaje, but the Mudcats bounced right back with a five-spot in the second. Jeremy Lucas drew a walk and moved to third on a double by Alex Monsalve off the center field wall. Then Jerrud Sabourin roped a double inside the bag at first to push the Mudcats in front 2-1. Logan Vick drew another base on balls and Todd Hankins singled home Sabourin. Yhoxian Medina followed with a run-scoring knock and Joe Sever capped the frame with a sac-fly to right.

The Mudcats kept the pressure turned up with five more in the third. Lucas earned a walk and raced to second on a wild pitch. Sabourin followed with a walk and a single by James Roberts loaded the bases. Vick worked another base on balls to force in Lucas for a 6-1 edge. Hankins bounced a grounder to short, but the throw towards second kicked into right-center. The error allowed Sabourin and Roberts to score two more. Medina flew a sac-fly to left and Joe Sever brought around Hankins with a hit to make it 10-1.

The clubs traded runs in the fourth. Luigi Rodriguez pinch-hit for Hankins and scored Lucas with a single before Salem responded with a run on a sac-fly by Aneury Tavarez.

Two runs in the sixth inning polished off the scoring for Carolina. Sabourin opened the inning with his fourth home run of the season, a long belt out to right. The Mudcats loaded the bases before Sever bounced a comebacker to the mound. The Red Sox forced out Vick at home, but the throw back to first sailed into foul territory. Rodriguez crossed home on the error for a 13-2 lead.

The Sox rallied for three runs in the seventh on hits by Matty Johnson and Dreily Guerrero. A wild pitch from reliever Ben Heller scored allowed Jordan Weems to score. Salem added their final run in the eighth when Heller launched a sac-fly to center off Benny Suarez.

Carolina hopes to earn their first series sweep of the Salem Red Sox on Thursday, July 31. First pitch at LewisGale Field is set for 7:05 p.m. The Mudcats return home to host the Potomac Nationals for a three-game series beginning August 1.
