MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Marcus Davis' two-run triple capped a ninth inning rally and spoiled seven terrific innings from Jonathan Martinez as the Winston-Salem Dash defeated the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 4-2 in the rubber game of a three-game series Wednesday night at TicketReturn.com Field.

Pelicans (3-4) reliever James Pugliese (0-1) had retired the first four batters he faced before allowing three straight hits in the top of the ninth. Gerson Montilla and Nick Basto both singled before Davis delivered the game-winning hit.

It was the first runs for Winston-Salem (3-4) since the first inning. Hunter Jones began the first inning for the Dash, before Louie Lechich doubled and Montilla singled home Jones. With runners at the corners and one out, Basto grounded into a double play, which allowed Lechich to come home to make it 2-0.

Down by two, the Pelicans mounted a comeback in the third when Rashad Crawford ripped a liner off of Davis' foot at first base for a one-out double. After Shawon Dunston Jr. walked, Ian Happ singled home Crawford on a looper to left. Two batters later, third baseman Jason Vosler pulled an RBI single into right to tie the game at two.

Both starting pitchers would halt the offense after that. Dash righty Matt Cooper went five innings, striking out six and walking two. Martinez lasted seven innings for Myrtle Beach, giving the Pelicans their longest outing of the year. After allowing the two runs in the first, Martinez surrendered just two hits over the next six frames.

Martinez has now allowed three runs or less in 28 of his last 29 starts dating back to July 18, 2014, his final start in the Dodgers' organization. Martinez has also held his opponents to four runs over his last 43 innings of work.

Dash reliever Nolan Sanburn picked up the win after turning in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. He struck out five and stranded two runners in the eighth, and three inherited runners in the seventh. Wednesday marked the second straight night that Myrtle Beach stranded nine runners or more.

The Pelicans will now head to Zebulon to take on the Carolina Mudcats for four games beginning Thursday night at 7 p.m. Zach Hedges (0-1, 5.06 ERA) will start on the mound for Myrtle Beach, as Matt Withrow makes his 2016 debut for Carolina. Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. onwww.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com and the TuneIn app.

The 2016 season is the 18th season for the Pelicans franchise and second as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2016, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
