Frederick Keys News Release

Frederick, Md. - The Frederick Keys are excited to announce that pitchers Kevin Gausman and Brian Matusz are scheduled to pitch on rehab assignments with the Keys on Friday night. Gausman is scheduled to start, as he works his way back from shoulder tendinitis. Matusz is slated to follow him in relief and is working his way back from a lower back strain. Both are continuing rehab assignments started with the Double-A Bowie Baysox.

Gausman, 25, makes his second rehab outing of the year on Friday. In his lone start with Bowie on Sunday, he pitched two innings and gave up four hits along with one unearned run. This marks the second straight year he has joined the orange and black on a rehab assignment. Last season, he pitched two games in June, going 0-0 with a 1.80 (5 IP/1ER) as he was coming back from shoulder tendinitis. With the Orioles in 2015, the Colorado native went 4-7 with a 4.25 ERA in 25 games (17 starts) in 112.1 innings. He allowed 109 hits, walked 29 and struck out 103. The 103 strikeouts were a career-high.

Matusz, 29, has appeared in three rehab games for the Baysox, allowing seven runs on eight hits in three innings. He started on Monday against Erie and gave up six runs in one inning on seven hits. A workhorse for the Orioles last season, Matusz appeared in 58 games, going 1-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 47 innings. He walked 20 and struck out 56. The 2.94 ERA was a career-best for the lefty, while he also posted a personal-best 10.29 SO/9IP.

As a minor leaguer, Gausman pitched for Frederick in 2012, after signing with Baltimore out of LSU. He appeared in three games, going 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA (9IP/6ER). Matusz was a member of the orange and black in 2009, going 4-2 with a 2.16 ERA in 11 starts. That season, he advanced to the Major Leagues, while he claimed the Jim Palmer Prize and was a midseason all-star.

The Keys conclude their seven-game roadtrip on Wednesday morning. Left-hander John Means (0-0, 5.40) makes the start for the Keys and will be opposed by Red Sox southpaw Daniel McGrath (1-0, 4.50). First pitch is slated for 11:05 a.m from LewisGale Field and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. Frederick kicks off its first homestand on Thursday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m and will feature a magnet schedule giveaway presented by Precision Heating and Cooling.
