Frederick Keys News Release
SALEM, VA -Jomar Reyes posted three RBIs, while Michael Zouzalik stranded the tying run on second base in the bottom of the ninth, as the Frederick Keys defeated the Salem Red Sox 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon at LewisGale Field. With the win, the Keys take the three game series and get back over .500 (4-3). John Means picked up his first Carolina League victory, tossing five innings of two-run baseball.
The Keys started early against Red Sox starter Daniel McGrath. Jay Gonzalez walked to open the game and Steve Wilkerson followed two batters later. From there, Reyes tallied his first two RBIs with a single down the right field line. He was thrown out trying to go to second on the play.
Frederick added single markers in the next two innings to make it a 4-0 game. Cam Kneeland opened the frame with a double, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a strikeout and a wild pitch. Additionally, Josh Hart hit a solo homer off Taylor Grover. It was his first of the season and third of his professional career.
McGrath (1-1) was forced to exit the game in the second, after colliding with Kneeland while covering on the wild pitch. Tagged with the loss, the southpaw allowed three runs on two hits in 1.2 innings. He walked two and struck out two.
Salem chipped away, scoring the next three runs. In the fourth, Andrew Benintendi tripled and scored on a sac-fly, while a double by Deiner Lopez and a single by Mauricio Duban plated the second run. That's all that Means (1-0) allowed though. Pitching five innings, he scattered four hits, walked one and struck out two.
In the seventh, the Red Sox made a bid to tie things up against Ivan Hernandez. Franklin Guzman singled and scored on a base hit by David Sopilka two batters later. Danny Mars added the third hit of the inning, to put the tying run at second base. However Hernandez got a critical 1-6-3 double play to keep it a one-run game.
Reyes provided the orange and black with an eighth inning insurance run. With men at first and second, Aderlin Rodriguez dropped down a sac-bunt, while Reyes brought home Hart via a sac-fly. It was the most RBIs Reyes had posted in a game since last August.
In the home ninth, Max Schuh walked the leadoff man, Mike Meyers after a long plate appearance and then plunked Guzman. The Keys lefty followed by retiring Deiner Lopez, but Keys manager Keith Bodie went back to the bullpen. Calling on Zouzalik, the right-hander struck out David Sopilka and got Danny Mars to ground out to end the game. It was Zouzalik's first save of the year.
The Keys play their home opener on Thursday night at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. Right-hander Matthew Grimes (1-0, 0.00) starts for the Keys against Hillcats lefty Luis Lugo (1-0, 0.00). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m from Nymeo Field and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
