Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (16-12) dropped the opening game of a three-game series with the Potomac Nationals (14-14) Friday, falling 10-3 in front of 4,175 fans at Pfitzner Stadium. The Pelicans will retain their lead in the southern division heading into play Saturday.
The Nationals opened the game up with four runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh. The seven-run loss is the second largest margin of defeat for the Pelicans this season.
Right-hander Luke Jackson took the loss (3-1) for the Pelicans, allowing three earned runs on four hits over five innings. The six strikeouts from Jackson is his second highest total of the season.
The Nationals took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a three-run home run from Cole Leonida. The home run came off Jackson, who had not given up a home run since opening night. The Nats threatened in the fifth inning but Jackson struck out Cutter Dykstra and Jason Martinson, stranding runners at second and third.
Nats starter A.J. Cole (1-1) was overpowering at times. He struck out the side in the fourth inning and fanned seven in his first five innings. The right-hander earned the win for Potomac, tossing six shutout innings with nine strikeouts and just four hits allowed.
Trailing 7-0, the Pelicans got on the board in the seventh inning on an RBI double from Kellin Deglan. He also added an RBI groundout in the eighth inning. The Pelicans trailed by as many as nine but scored twice in the eighth inning to cut the margin to seven.
Royce Bolinger and Drew Robinson each recorded two hits for the Pelicans. Rougned Odor singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
Luis Sardinas made a highlight reel caliber play in the fourth inning, ranging to his left and robbing Adrian Sanchez of a base hit.
The Pelicans continue a three-game series with the Nationals on Saturday. Left-hander Victor Payano (1-2, 4.76) will take on right-hander Brian Dupra (0-0, 0.00).
