WINSTON-SALEM DASH (14-13) vs. SALEM RED SOX (12-13)
RHP Chris Bassitt vs. RHP William Cuevas (1-2, 6.11 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, NC)
DASH CONCLUDE TRIP WITH 6-4 LOSS Winston-Salem wrapped up its seven-game road swing with a 6-4 defeat in Lynchburg Thursday night at Calvin Falwell Field. Dash starter Bryan Blough gave up six runs on six hits, and he issued a career-high six walks. The Dash trailed by four entering the ninth inning before rallying for a pair of runs. However, with two men aboard and the Dash down two, Mark Tracy struck out and David Herbek popped out to end the game. Winston dropped to 2-6 against the defending league champs in 2013.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING In the losing effort Thursday, infielder Jeremy Farrell drove in all four of Winston-Salem's runs thanks to a homer in the fifth and a single in the ninth. Farrell is now tied with Lynchburg's Robby Hefflinger for the Carolina League with 21 RBIs. The former Pittsburgh farmhand has recorded those 21 RBIs in only eight of his 19 games, six of which are multi-RBI days. Among active Winston whackers, Farrell owns the best average with men in scoring position (.400).
BASSITT'S BREAKING OUT Dash starter Chris Bassitt has turned in three consecutive gems, all of which resulted in wins. The righty twirled seven scoreless and whiffed a career-high nine April 17 at Myrtle Beach for his first victory of the campaign. Six days later, the former Akron Zip earned a quality start against Lynchburg at BB&T Ballpark. In his last outing Sunday, Bassitt took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and blanked Wilmington over seven frames. In these three efforts, Bassitt has given up just two runs on nine hits in 20 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.10, sixth-best in the CL.
CURLEY FRIES Infielder Chris Curley leads the Dash and is sixth on the circuit with a .309 average. Curley has hit safely in 18 of his 25 games and has gone back-to-back starts without a hit only once. The Kentucky native is tied for second on the club in homers (4) and third in RBIs (14).
HAWKINS PLACED ON DISABLED LIST Dash outfielder and White Sox top prospect Courtney Hawkins has been placed on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury, the Sox announced Thursday. Hawkins made a diving catch to end the third inning of Wednesday's game in Lynchburg, but he was slow to get to his feet. Hawkins was able to jog to the dugout, but David Herbek replaced him as a pinch hitter in the fourth. In 23 games thus far this season, Hawkins is hitting .177 with a team-leading seven homers and 17 RBIs. At the time of his injury, Hawkins paced the minors with 45 strikeouts, although he had only whiffed four times in the five games before his trip to the DL.
DASH TO 600 When Winston-Salem took the field Thursday in Lynchburg, it was the 600th time the franchise suited up as the Dash in a regular season or playoff game. Since becoming the Dash prior to the 2009 season, the franchise boasts a record of 331-268-1 (.553). The Dash have qualified for the postseason in three of their first four seasons, including a pair of trips to the Mills Cup Championship Series (2010 and 2012). A total of 13 players who have worn the Dash's purple have made it to Major League Baseball.
LAST SEASON VERSUS SALEM The Dash posted a 10-8-1 record against the Red Sox a year ago. Salem was the closest competitor during the Dash's run to the first-half Southern Division title. Winston-Salem edged the Sox by three games to clinch the playoff berth in mid-June. These two teams also played to the only tie in the minors last year thanks to a power outage in their final meeting of the first half (3-3 score on June 7 in Salem).
ONE MILLIONTH FAN AT BB&T BALLPARK The Dash expect to welcome their one millionth fan to BB&T Ballpark sometime this month. Through three-plus seasons at BB&T Ballpark, the franchise has drawn 972,463 fans, which is the highest total in High-A baseball in that span.
